Yanmar 6LP-STE senders for Beede gauges??

Post by Mike Monte »

I had my 6LP engine serviced over the winter and all of the senders/sensors replaced...
I told the company (in writing) that I wanted all of my old fully-functional senders/sensors saved for me (to keep on-hand to use as spares...).
well....

Yesterday I had the sea trial and two of the gauges did not work....
The shop had put all Yanmar sensors/senders on the engine...two of which: Oil/temp, did not work with the Beede gauges...

I told the the tech to just put the original ones back in and be done with it...
but
....they can't find them............................................................................................hmmm were they saved?????

All new senders/sensors were close to $1K in parts only......

Does anyone know what senders to use?

Not happy.

I replaced mine but to be honest I can't find the information. I believe they were pretty standard but the Yanmar ones were different from the Beede ones as I recall. So they must of used Yanmar ones and not Beede ranges. Start by researching the Beede gauges specification sheet. It will tell you what range. Like 0-135ohm etc...

Ok,
After much research (some on my part) & calling Beede support myself I learned that teflon tape should not be used as the oil pressure sender uses thread contact to the block as ground.

The tech originally had used teflon tape.......

The sender was removed and re-inserted without teflon tape, and finally we got a reading however, the pressure reading was way too high as compared to the original sender on the engine.

I asked the tech to remove the sender and put his "shop pressure gauge" in its place to see what the actual pressure is, thus comparing readings. As it turns out, the new Beede pressure sensor to gauge reads 2x the pressure as opposed to the shop gauge.
I am good with the above 'cause it's easy to do the math in my head.
