Cruise speed?

Post by John1959 »

We’re looking at a 32 with 315/330 Cummins. Broker/owner claims cruise speed of 18 knots and 22 knots WOT. This seems a bit optimistic. Thoughts? First time we’ve been on an Albin 32. Nice boat

A lot depends on RPM, propeller pitch, and sea conditions. Our 96 32+2 with the 315 motor can cruise 16-18 kts at 2400 rpm. At WOT she'll do 23. But other people report less, especially if they have extra weight like hardtops, etc.

Hi John, I agree with Sanatee. Conditions matter. We have an '02 32+2 with Cummins 370hp. We do have a hard top, the full tilting aluminum frame with complete "camper back" canvas all the way around the cockpit. We are set up for cruising therefore likely carrying a fair amount of weight. With clean bottom and prop, WOT (3000rpm) is 21/22knts. Generally cruise at 24-2500rpm and get 15-16knts. I hope this helps and I think the owners claims are just a little "happy."
When we bought our boat, requested a quick "check ride" before survey. This way you can get a feel for the boat and stated performance claims.
I paid a deposit marked and agreed to be fully refundable and offered to pay fuel for check ride (although that offer was politely declined by the seller). The owner was happy to demo the boat. And in this "buyers" market, I would expect your seller to be cooperative.

Thanks for the replies. We couldn’t agree on price, so we’re going to keep looking.
